Unsinkable Faith

Text: Matthew 14:22–36          Isaiah 41:10

Matthew 14:22–36

22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

Isaiah 41:10  Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Faith rooted in Christ, not the flesh, will keep us afloat in every storm.

Life will bring storms—winds, waves, and fears we cannot control.

Like the disciples, we often find ourselves straining in the dark, worn out, afraid, and wondering if Jesus even sees us.

But then comes His voice: “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

Tonight, I want to preach to you on “Unsinkable Faith.”

The Sinking Ship of the Flesh

Romans 8:6   “To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

The disciples rowed hard, but the storm was stronger than their flesh. The carnal mind cannot overcome spiritual battles.

Many today try to mix worldly thinking with spiritual life – dog – yet the flesh will always sink.

A ship with a leak may look fine at first, but water always wins unless something stronger displaces it. Flesh cannot sustain the life of God.

If you rely on your own strength, you will sink. But if you rely on Christ, He will uphold you.

The Word That Holds Us Up

Peter didn’t walk on water—he walked on Jesus’ word: “Come.”

Isaiah 41:10 reminds us: “I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

That “hand” is the same hand that caught Peter when he began to sink.

Unsinkable faith isn’t about ignoring the waves—it’s about fixing your eyes on Jesus.

Faith like Christ = Believing that what God has spoken cannot fail

Fear is Forbidden When Jesus is Present

Jesus said: “Do not be afraid.” This is not a suggestion but a command.

Fear and faith cannot sit in the same boat—one will always throw the other overboard.

2 Timothy 1:7  “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”

Jesus revealed His identity in the storm: “It is I” (ego eimi, “I AM”). When the Great I AM is near, there is no room for fear.

Unsinkable faith trusts His presence more than the problem.

The Outstretched Hand of Jesus in “Unsinkable Faith”

The Sinking Flesh Meets the Saving Hand

Peter began to sink when his focus shifted from Christ to the storm.

Matthew 14:31 – “And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him…”

Flesh may fail, but Jesus’ hand never misses. He doesn’t let Peter drown—He catches him right where he is.

“You may feel yourself going under, but Jesus’ hand is already reaching for you. The storm may be strong, but His grip is stronger.”

Isaiah 41:10 Fulfilled in the Storm

“…I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

That promise becomes flesh in Matthew 14 when Jesus grabs Peter.

“Isaiah said He would uphold you with His right hand, and in the storm, He proves it. His outstretched hand is the bridge between fear and faith.”

The Outstretched Hand is Always Extended

The hand of Jesus is not withdrawn when we fail.

Even when Peter doubted, the hand was there. Even when you stumble, His hand is stretched out still (Isaiah 9:12).

That hand represents mercy, grace, strength, and rescue.

“Man’s hand will point at you, accuse you, or push you down. But the hand of Jesus will always lift you up.”

Tonight, I see Jesus walking into this place with His hand outstretched. That hand is reaching for you, in the middle of your storm. That hand is reaching for you, while you’re sinking in fear. That hand is stronger than the waves, stronger than the wind, stronger than the weight pulling you down.

Will you take His hand tonight? Will you let Him lift you up? Don’t stay in the boat. Don’t stay in fear. His hand is here, outstretched, waiting for you. “Come” was the word Jesus extended His hand to Peter. Grab hold of the hand of Jesus.

Storms will come. Fear will knock. Flesh will fail. But faith in Jesus will never sink.

Tonight, Jesus is still saying: “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

Some of you are like Peter—stepping out but sinking because your eyes have shifted. Jesus is reaching out His hand.

Others are still in the boat, paralyzed by fear. Jesus is calling you to courage.

Come, take His hand tonight. Lay down fear. Lay down flesh. Step into unsinkable faith in Jesus Christ.
