THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, of our Lord;

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit;

Born of the Virgin Mary;

Suffered under Pontius Pilate;

Was crucified, dead and buried;

He descended into Hell;

The third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven;

And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit;

The Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen

Suffered under Pontus Pilate

Pilate was governor of Judea from AD 26-36

Ten years was a long time to rule in a cutthroat job.

Every line in the creed is important.

This gives us a glimpse into history.

There is a time and place that we can point to.

The first century historian Josephus had much to say in his book “Antiquities of the Jews”( 93-94 AD)

How did Jesus suffer?

His suffering was physical

Isaiah 52:14 (ESV) As many were astonished at you– his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind–

His suffering was emotional His suffering was spiritual.

His suffering was emotional.

Matthew 26:56 (NKJV) “But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

His suffering was spiritual.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

He had the weight of the whole world on him

1 John 2:2 (ESV) He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

Isaiah 53:3-5 (ESV)

3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

His sweat became as great drops of blood. – won back our will power He was beaten with rods- Bruised for our iniquities

He was scourged with a “cat of nine tails” – by his stripes we are healed

Platted with the Crown of Thorns The curse is broken

Pierced hands and feet- authority

Pierced heart- Healed our broken heart (won back joy)

The Bible says we have no righteousness of our own. Our righteousness is as filthy rags.

You’ve got a problem all unrighteousness is sin. You must be clothed in

Christ righteousness.

You’ve got on the wrong clothes!

Jesus takes your dirty, filthy rags, and clothes you in his righteousness!

Why did he have to suffer so much, couldn’t he have just fallen on a sword?

Hebrews 4:15 (ESV) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

When we see the cross, we see how our sin looks.

Was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended into hell.

Sheol in OT

Gehenna NT

This scripture is a mystery. We won’t spend long here.

Some teach that Jesus suffered in hell for three days, but not when he said it is finished on the cross it is finished.

He descended like a boss!

Rose again

Ascended

Sits at the right hand of God

The resurrection shows Jesus’ power over death. It shows that God accepted the sacrifice he ascended, and he ever lives to make intercession for you and I.

1 Corinthians 15:14 (ESV) And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is in vain.

Hebrews 7:25 (KJV) Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Judge the living and the dead.

Acts 17:31 (ESV) because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

I believe in the Holy Spirit

John 16:8 (KJV) And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

The forgiveness of sins.

Psalms 103:12-13 (KJV) 12 As far as the east is from the west, [so] far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 13 Like as a father pitieth [his] children, [so] the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

There is nothing that cannot be forgiven.

The Resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen.

John 14:19 (KJV) Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
